Satya Pal Malik, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79 after a long illness. He was receiving treatment at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and breathed his last around 1 PM.
Malik is best remembered for his role during a significant chapter in India’s history — the abrogation of Article 370. He served as the last Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. It was during his tenure that the government revoked Article 370 on August 5, 2019, ending the region’s special status.
Ironically, his passing comes on the sixth anniversary of that historic move.
